?Under One Roof? has been an arts and heritage project run by Skippko, a Leeds based community arts organisation, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Children and older people in Leeds have brought heritage to life through giant ?Russian Dolls?. Stories range from war time experiences to Sikh and Irish heritage and memories of the past industries of Leeds. Each of four older people?s groups, Burmantofts Senior Action, Sikh Elders, South Leeds Live @ Home Scheme and Leeds Irish Health and Homes have created their ?dolls? based on knowledge gained by exploring their heritage. The groups worked alongside school children at Shakespeare primary, St Nicholas Catholic primary, Hugh Gaitskell primary and Little London primary so that heritage could be brought to life in the classroom.
The recordings on Sonic City are a selection of those made during the 8 month project, a CD with further recordings is available from Skippko.
The ?Russian Dolls? created will be housed at Artemis, part of Education Leeds, as a resource for other schools to access.
Fiona Spiers, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire and the Humber, said: ?The Under One Roof project has taken a unique approach to gathering people?s memories and displaying them in an exciting and creative way to encourage the community to engage with their heritage. Skippko has worked hard to build relationships within the community, developing an understanding of their local heritage and its importance.?
The project has brought about new partnership working between Skippko, Leeds Museums Discovery Centre, Leeds Libraries and Artforms at Education Leeds to ensure a unique and exciting experience for all those taking part.
